Garbage for you, mam?
I am not one of those people who will flip the newspaper over a cup of coffee in the morning. As a matter of fact, I hadn’t been flipping the papers for quite a while now. Sometime ago, I had marvelled at how much crap the media is trying to sell to us, overcrowding our senses with so much of distraction that I had decided I can do without those distractions. I have enough challenges already as it is, trying to stay focused.
This day, I had a renewed interest and had started once again to wonder what lies within the almighty newspapers these days, and what it has in store for the mankind of this Diwali Day. And I thought, just perhaps the papers will once again be filled with happy news about life and celebration…. And so, I began flipping the pages……..
The first few pages tell me about the sad tragedy in Philippines, and how the storm ravaged areas need to be evacuated again. And I thought about my old friends in Philippines, I would need to send them a message and ask about them.
Reading on, the papers tell me that the Thai king is well and that my neighbour, Malaysia, the MCA president seems to stay on after the series of fanfare.
As I go on, I got instantly updated about some unfortunate car accident fatalities, a man who got jailed after pouring urine on another, while another got jailed for sexual assault. Also, 3 loan sharks suspects were held or some fake apparel syndicates got busted. Hmm…. Very interesting but otherwise news I can really live without.
And I began to wonder if my life would really change for the better if I had religiously flipped the papers every morning……… and my attention was caught by this HD Plasma TV that the store is giving up to 70% discount because of Deepavali Festival! Wow!! 70% discount…(I had somehow missed the tiny words ‘up to’), and the furniture warehouse sale NOT to be missed! Or yet another ½ page advert on the amazing 3G iphone package (hmm..I’m now seriously considering replacing my 1st generation 8GB iphone which had accompanied me for the last 2years). Perhaps I should consider investing in an air purifier too now that they are all on 50% discount!
Perhaps, I shouldn’t go on looking at the Oh-so-attractive adverts; they’ll just drive my lust for merchandise wilder. ‘Stay centred….stay cool……’ I told myself as I take a deep breath, and brace myself for what lies ahead on the papers.
Hmm…. Being a Life Coach, perhaps I ought to check out the seminars and workshops out there to keep myself abreast. And ho… there are only about 5 Forex and Trading seminars that say I will regret if I miss them. Or this Global Internet Summit which I shouldn’t miss too. So, perhaps I should throw a dart and let the dart decide the one I REALLY shouldn’t miss.
And as if the divine has chosen this specific moment to speak to me. Dennis Waitley’s message came to me; the trap of “the more I buy, the more I need.” What wise words…. Life is not about remote controls and automatic car locks, big screen plasma TVs or a universal remote that controls everything (watch ‘Click’ if you hadn’t already watched it). Life is about precious moments spent with friends and families, donation to a cause or organisation that would make a difference, reaching out to the world to make a little change, it is about smelling the roses, and feel a deep sense of gratitude towards the beauty of people, the beauty of the world. Life is about giving…. Afterall, all that I take will forever be lost, but what I give will forever remain mine.
As I turn the last page, I have a renewed determination that moving forward in life, I will count my blessings instead of my possessions. I will spend more time with people I love, instead of spending more money on things I don’t need. And lastly, the newspapers remain as something I will flip over a cup of coffee only once in a blue moon. It is afterall, garbage I don’t really need.

And when I got my partner the opportunity to conduct the UPW Previews for Success Resources in KL, UPW became even more of a Reality for me for the fact that …..Finally, I’m going to see Tony LIVE! I was so EXCITED about attending UPW in Singapore that my partner, Master Coach DEV & I actually made a decision to re-schedule our Train-the-Trainer certification in KL so that we can allow our participants to go for UPW as well! ———- and I must say, it was indeed a great decision we had both made!
Our new friend from Shanghai China whom we met on day 1 while at the queue. And my co-partners who will fight for my seat, Master Coach DEV & Jet while I hold on precariously to our daily supply of take-away food. (I can’t imagine how it would be I get trampled upon or the food….ghastly…)
